The Forest of Avon covers over 220 square miles and is an environmental initiative which is transforming
the landscape in and around Bristol. This project is increasing tree cover to create a unique mix of
woodlands, open space, farmland, homes and nature areas - growing more beautiful with the years.
There is also lots to do, with interesting places to visit, guided walks, recreational paths, wildlife watching,
cycling, picnicking, art trails and much, much more.
Trees are not abundant in and around Bristol. At present, the Forest area has one of England’s lowest rates
of woodland cover - 7 per cent, compared to 18 per cent in Surrey. One of the Forest’s long term goals is
to increase local woodland cover to 30 per cent. In all, more than 15 million new trees are to be planted
over the next 40 years.
The Forest of Avon is not just about planting trees, but also encouraging local people to make the most of
their environment through arts, education and recreation projects. Many walking and cycling routes have
been developed; The Community Forest Path, a 45 mile recreational route encircling the city attracts
as many people as the guided walks programme which offers attractive and interesting walks covering a
range of distances, taking in scenic views, nature trails, places of historic interest and natural open spaces.
The latest initiative involves the development of a mountain bike trail in the woodlands around Ashton
Court Estate.
